Modern Hanukkah Menorahs for Every Home

A Hanukkah menorah does its best work after dark: eight nights in the window, a little more light each evening, and everyone gathering in for the blessings before the latkes go cold. Nine branches, one shamash to light the rest, and a story about a little oil that lasted longer than anyone expected.

The nine lights haven't changed in centuries, but the chanukiah that holds them has. Pale concrete in a single quiet row. Hand-painted enamel in ruby, emerald and ocean blue. Gold-plated nickel that catches every flame. Even a train for the kids, who will absolutely want to light it themselves.

At SURI, we design and curate modern menorahs that look as good on a bookshelf in spring as they do on the eighth night: minimalist concrete, handmade enamel by Israeli artists, and designs that keep working long after the candles are packed away.

How to Choose a Hanukkah Menorah

Start with the lights. Traditionally, the eight lights sit in a row, with the shamash set apart. Then choose candles or oil. Most of our designs take standard Hanukkah candles, many also hold oil cups, and a few are made for tealights; each product page lists the candle type.

Then think about where it will stand. Many families light in a front window or near the door, so measure the sill before falling for a sixteen-inch statement piece. A slim single row suits a narrow ledge; a wide sculptural piece wants the middle of the table, well away from curtains and curious hands.

Finally, style. Minimalist concrete settles into a modern home and lets the flames do the talking. An artistic menorah in hand-painted enamel is happy to be the loudest thing in the room for eight nights. If it's going to stay out all year, and the good ones do, choose the one you'd keep out after the last candle.

Find the Right Menorah for Your Home

Drawn to clean lines? Our concrete menorahs come in white, stone and gray. Prefer a little shine? Gold menorahs in gold-plated nickel make the most of candlelight. For color, the Hadarya Premium collection brings hand-painted enamel in jewel tones.

Browse by type at the top of the page: classic designs, kids' menorahs, modular pieces and handmade, artistic work. A few even double as Shabbat candle holders once Hanukkah ends, the hardest working Judaica in the house.

Every menorah for sale on this page can be filtered by material, color and style, so hundreds of designs narrow to a handful. Shopping for unique menorahs as a gift? Browse wedding and housewarming gifts, and add a matching tray to catch the wax.

      Hanukkah Menorah FAQ

What is the difference between a menorah and a chanukiah?

The menorah in the ancient Temple had seven branches. The Hanukkah menorah, also called a chanukiah, has nine: eight lights for the eight nights and a shamash, the helper light used to kindle the others. In everyday American English, both are called a menorah.

How do you light a Hanukkah menorah?

Add one candle each night, placing them from right to left. Light the shamash, say the blessings, then light the newest candle first and work your way right. There are two blessings every night, plus Shehecheyanu on the first.

Where should you place a menorah?

Traditionally in a window facing the street, so the light is seen from outside, or by the front door on the left side, opposite the mezuzah. Either way, a steady, heat-safe surface and no curtains nearby.

Can I use oil instead of candles?

Yes. Olive oil recalls the original miracle, and candles are just as acceptable. Whichever you use, the lights should burn at least 30 minutes after nightfall. On Friday, light before the Shabbat candles, with longer candles or more oil so they last.

How many candles do you need for Hanukkah?

44 in total: 36 for the eight nights plus a shamash each night. A standard box of Hanukkah candles holds exactly that.

What makes a Hanukkah menorah kosher?

The eight lights should stand in a straight row at the same height, with the shamash set apart, higher or to the side, so it's clearly the helper light. Candles or oil both work. Many modern and artistic designs follow these guidelines; check the product photos, or ask us about a specific design.

Is a menorah a good wedding or housewarming gift?

One of the best. It's unwrapped once and lit every year after, usually with the person who gave it in mind.

Where can I buy a Hanukkah menorah online?
